These days, torrential rains in India have brought relief to many cities. But at the same time, it has also increased problems. There are reports of waterlogging in many places in Delhi, Mumbai, and many big cities. On one hand, there is relief from the heat, on the other hand, vehicles are getting stuck on water-filled roads. Engines of vehicles are getting damaged and the risk of road accidents has also increased. In such a situation, if you are not prepared, then you are sure to face huge losses and danger.
It is very important to take some precautions before leaving home with the car in the rain. A little wisdom can save you from heavy repair costs and danger to life. Remember – if there is any doubt in the mind, stop the car. It is always safer to wait during the rain than to get stuck by driving in deep water. Here we are telling you some very important tips. Which will ensure the safety of you and your vehicle.
Avoid waterlogged roads
If you see water filled on any road, then even if you have to take a slightly longer route, do not go from there. Trying to pull the vehicle out of deep water can cause the engine to get hydrostatically locked. Which is a very expensive and serious technical fault.
Know the wading depth of your vehicle.
Every vehicle has a fixed limit of how deep water it can safely come out of. This is called wading depth. Usually, for hatchback and sedan cars, it is around 300 mm, while SUVs can go up to 500 to 600 mm. Still, caution is important. For correct information, check your vehicle’s manual or the company’s website.
Drive at a slow and steady speed.
If for some reason you have to pass through a waterlogged road, then keep the vehicle in first gear drive slowly, and let the engine speed remain maintained. Due to fast acceleration or sudden braking, water can enter the engine or the vehicle’s balance can be disturbed.
Do not force start a vehicle that is stuck in water
If your vehicle is stuck in water, do not try to start it immediately. Doing so can cause heavy damage to the engine from inside. In such a situation, it would be better if you call roadside assistance or towing service.
Keep the AC off, keep the windows slightly open.
Turning off the AC reduces the load on the engine. Also, keep the windows slightly open so that the glass does not fog up and you can see the road.
Turn on hazard lights and fog lamps.
Visibility becomes very low in heavy rain or water-filled areas. In such a situation, keep the hazard lights and fog lamps on so that other vehicles can see you.
Dry the brakes
When you come out of the water, slowly press the brake pedal lightly. This dries the brake pads and the braking starts working properly.
Keep the right air in the tires
If there is less air in the tires, then the risk of aquaplaning i.e. the tire losing contact with the road increases in the rain. This can cause the vehicle to skid. So, before going out, make sure to check the tire’s air pressure and tread depth.
