Ford has announced a major recall in the US, which could affect more than 1 million cars. According to media reports, a software glitch has been found in these cars due to which the rearview camera is not working properly. This defect can cause the camera image to stop, come late, or not appear at all when putting the car in reverse, which increases the risk of accidents.
Problem information and solution
Ford has informed the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about this problem this month. To fix this, the company will either take it to the dealership and update the car or remove it through an ‘over-the-air’ (OTA) software update. An initial notification letter will be sent to affected customers from June 16, 2025, and when the fix is available, a second letter will be sent in the third quarter.

How was this software bug detected?
In April, Ford’s engineering team repeated this defect in a test vehicle and found a particular software version to be the reason behind it. This software is the operating system of the vehicle’s dashboard which controls infotainment, apps, maps, etc. Now this software will be changed through an OTA update.
Such cases have come before
In April 2025, Ford announced two more recalls related to the rearview camera, which were affecting about 2.89 lakh vehicles. In these cases, the company is planning to completely replace the camera.
Not only this, in November 2024, NHTSA informed that Ford had to pay a fine of $165 million (about Rs 1,370 crore) after an investigation. In that investigation, it was revealed that Ford had delayed in recalling vehicles with defective rear cameras.
NHTSA started this investigation in August 2021, when Ford recalled about 6.2 lakh vehicles in 2020 due to rear camera defects. Later in the recall done in 2022, this number increased and 24,000 vehicles were added in March.
