As the British boy band continues its world tour, fans are eagerly anticipating the release of the band’s 10th album. The 10th studio album is called Moon Music and is scheduled for October 4. But what’s more surprising is that Coldplay has revealed its plans to retire from making music albums after releasing their 12th studio album.
In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, frontman Chris Martin shared that the band will be retiring from creating music. Despite the retirement announcement, fans shouldn’t worry about the end of Coldplay as a band. Martin hinted that members may continue to work on separate projects together, collaborating with Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion.
During the interview, Martin revealed that Coldplay plans to retire after they release their 12th studio album. He said, “We are only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s real. Having that limit means the quality control is so high right now and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great. And so where we could be coasting, we’re trying to improve.” He explained that deciding the 12-album limit was not some random decision. Rather, it was inspired by some of the biggest musical influences in their lives.
He explained, “There’s only seven Harry Potters. There’s only 12 ½ Beatles’ albums, there’s about the same for Bob Marley, so all our heroes.” However, this was not the only reason behind their decision. He stated that he wanted his bandmates to have their own space outside the band.
Martin added, “To make an album great as a band, it’s such a lot of wrangling of people, and I want to give the others some of their life for themselves,” as reported by NBC News.
The band’s Music of the Spheres tour has been a massive success. It has grossed over $1 billion in ticket sales since its inception in 2022. The tour has taken them across Europe and will soon move to Australia and New Zealand next month. The band will also perform in Asia next year and has recently announced shows in the UK.
While some fans are saddened by the news, others are perplexed by the announcement being made so far in advance. One user on X wrote, “Why are they announcing it years in advance?”Another user commented, “End of an era… BTW why are they announcing already?” Regardless, fans will have two more albums to look forward to before Coldplay hangs up its musical hat.
