Microsoft has now announced that Microsoft 365 apps (commonly called Office apps) will continue to receive security updates on Windows 10 until 2028, changing its earlier decision. The company recently updated its support page, stating that these apps will continue to be updated for three years even after the official support of Windows 10 ends.
Microsoft says that this decision has been taken to give users time to transition to Windows 11. According to the company, Microsoft 365 on Windows 10 will now continue to receive security updates until October 10, 2028, although Microsoft has also warned that using apps on unsupported operating systems like Windows 10 can cause performance and security risks.
Aggressive strategy regarding Windows 11
Microsoft is pushing users to adopt Windows 11. At CES 2025, the company declared this year as the “Year of Windows 11 PC Refresh”. The main reason for this is the Copilot+ AI features, which are only available on Windows 11.
Microsoft has also launched new subscription plans to access these AI features, but due to the stringent hardware demands of Windows 11, millions of old PCs cannot upgrade. In such a situation, users have no other option but to buy a new PC.
