Happy Good Friday 2019: For Christians across the world, it is a day for solemn mourning.

New Delhi:

Good Friday, also known as Great Friday, Black Friday, Easter Friday or Holy Friday falls on April 19 this year. It holds special significance for the Christian community as it commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at the Calvary. Christ was betrayed by Judas and sentenced to death. Christians believe Jesus was crucified on Good Friday and rose again three days later – which is marked as Easter. The three days are known as the Easter Triduum. The word ''good'' in the Good Friday stands for pious or holy. In many parts of the world, Good Friday is a declared public holiday. Good Friday is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum, precedes Easter Sunday, and may coincide with the Jewish observance of Passover. The death of Jesus symbolises the death and forgiveness for all of mankind's sins, with Jesus taking the ultimate sacrifice for the good of all humans.

Good Friday Observance:

For Christians across the world, Good Friday is observed as a day for solemn mourning. On Good Friday, people keep fasts and pray to the Lord. It's a day of repentance and reminder of Jesus Christ's sacrifices. Church services are organised around noon or midday to 3 PM. To observe this day, all the decorations from the statues are removed. The priests are dressed in black robes.

One of the most important Good Friday symbol is the crucifix, or cross, which represents the way in which Jesus died. Other symbols of Good Friday include black cloth used to cover the cross, paintings and statues in churches and some homes to signify mourning.

Good Friday In German:

In German, the Good Friday is called Karfreitag, which means "Sorrowful Friday." In English, the term "Good" is debated. Some believe it developed from an older name, "God's Friday" and the word "Good" in Good Friday means holy or pious.
