Delhi’s Air Quality Remains “Very Poor”, Situation To Worsen Next Month

Delhi's air quality continued to remain in the "very poor" category today as a thick haze engulfed the city which is battling alarming levels of pollution.

An overall Air Quality Index of 348 was recorded, according to data of the Central Pollution Control Board.

Twenty-nine monitoring stations located in different parts of the city recorded "very poor" air quality while four stations recorded "severe" air quality.

An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101 and 200 "moderate", 201 and 300 "poor", 301 and 400 "very poor", and 401 and 500 "severe".

Authorities have attributed the deterioration of air quality to local factors like construction activities and vehicular pollution as well as regional factors like pollution by stubble burning from neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana.

Authorities said the situation might further deteriorate next month during the festive season.

According to the Centre-run System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), pollution is likely to increase to the upper levels of "very poor" but will not touch "severe" levels for the next two days.

"This is owing to stagnation conditions forced by calm winds with low ventilation and moderate stubble injection," according to the SAFAR.

SAFAR data also showed that stubble burning decreased in the last two days compared to last week.

On Thursday, 36 per cent pollution of PM2.5 (presence of particles in the air with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometres) by stubble burning was recorded in the national capital.

On Monday, 17 per cent share of bio-mass (stubble burning emission) was recorded in the overall level of PM2.5 of Delhi.

SAFAR has issued a health advisory due to increase in pollution levels in Delhi.

The health advisory is specifically for people suffering from heart or lung diseases, older adults and children asking them to avoid prolonged or heavy exertion.
